Well, the UPCEA regionals are over, but far from it as many issues will continue to be discussed. It was so exciting to see the great keynotes and excellent content presented at the meetings. The networking was great and it feels like the UPCEA ball keeps rising to the challenges of online and continuing education. I presented "A Deeper Dive into Demographics ..." at the Central and New England meetings and had a few epiphanies along the way regarding the millennials and boomers. In short, I've summarized the following about each group: 1. Millennials (74 million strong and about 18 to 34 years of age) - They have on average about 249 Facebook friends ...

Hello all, I just wanted to let you know of two resources or opportunities: 1) The materials from the UPCEA/Hobsons Adult Student Gains Pilot webinar are available in the CORe library under the CRC Reports. This is the same study that was presented in Miami, but enhanced a bit in a webinar over the summer. Enjoy the materials! 2) We are about three weeks away from launching the next study on Adult Student Gains and have a limited number of spaces open for institutions to participate. We would need to have commitment from you and an email file to us by October 3, 2014 if possible. There is no cost to you. You just need to provide us with an email ...

Hello all, First, thank you for contributing to the 2014 State Authorization Survey. The findings can be found in the CORe library at 2014Results . With nearly 500 respondents, we had our largest response to this year's survey, as compared to year's past. The survey result shows that our institutions are making progress, but there's still a lot of work to do. With a higher sample size this year, you'll also see differences based on size of institution and other factors. Just wanted to share with you a cool chart that the New York Times published on what people say to "where they were born" at the state level. Depending on whether you are studying braindrain or the impact of adult education as a result of immigration, it can be an interesting chart . For greater detail, you can also see more specifics on the following link . Interestingly enough, the data shows that Californians are leaving the state and influencing the population make up of some many other states. Good stuff and I love a good map! Jim

As the Internet is getting "faster" and cell signals have supposedly improved, our demand often creates logjams and clutter in both the cellular and Internet pipelines. In 2006, I did a presentation on technology and reported that I had an Internet speed of 800 Kps. Today, I am supposed to have in upwards of 30 Mbs. However, as a digital society, we've added more users and these users have been transmitting more data (see Netflix growth ) at a higher rate. As a result, I may not be receiving that much better of an experience as I had in 2006. As a result of the digital logjams, Netflix, Verizon, Time Warner and Comcast have pushed the net neutrality issue, ...

For the fall 2014 quarter, the University of California, Irvine Extension is launching a new Strategic Leadership Development Certificate Program for professionals seeking leadership skills essential to being an effective executive, manager, supervisor, or team member in any field or industry. This program is offered in a new delivery format, Direct Assessment, which places emphasis on the quality of work done on multiple online projects. UC Irvine Extension sets the precedent for being one of the first institutions to utilize this format in continuing education. Rather than spending time inside the classroom taking courses, participants will be completing ...

Yes, it is an over-used phrase ... "If you build it, they will come," as stated by Ray Kinsella in Field of Dreams . However, it is relevant to the enrollment management process that higher education has built, especially in continuing education and online learning units. UPCEA recently conducted a survey of members and found that one-in-five institutions have no enrollment management plan and 24% have disjointed processes. We've built marketing systems to attract new students, but are we really ready to serve them optimally? The UPCEA Center for Research and Consulting has conducted a number of CRM and marketing reviews and some of our organizations have ...

Ever get tired of reading occupational data and going through pages and pages of tables? This chart, while long, may say a lot. It contains all 820 Bureau of Labor Statistics salaries summarized in one place. Of course, it would be great to segment it or see different looks of it, but it's at least interesting. Labor Data All in One Chart . To properly cite this, the chart was published by Business Insider and Rob Wile. Enjoy, Jim

The following is a blog post from Shawn Devine, a curriculum consultant with JMH Consulting . Please feel free to post other tips and instructions you give to instructors who teach online. Let me begin by saying that I am a hardcore fan of traditional classroom style teaching. As a facilitator I get energy from the exchange that happens when I interact in-person with the students. I’m also a realist and changing expectations have led me to transition many of my professional development programs from the physical classroom to the virtual classroom. Along the way I've learned what contributes to the success of an online class and here’s a short summary of ...

The U.S.-Russia Innovation Corridor ( USRIC ) is housed at the University of Maryland’s International Incubator , is a tangible result of the cooperative relationship between American Councils, UMD , UNN , the state of Maryland and the Nizhny Novgorod region in the context of the EURECA pilot program. http://www.brookings.edu/research/books/2013/mrputin Who is Vladimir Putin? In Mr. Putin, Russia experts Fiona Hill and Clifford Gaddy argue that Russia's President, Vladimir Putin, is in fact a man of many and complex identities. Drawing on a range of sources, including their own personal encounters, they describe six that are most essential: the Statist, the History Man, the Survivalist, the Outsider, the Free Marketeer, and the Case Officer. Understanding Putin’s multiple dimensions is crucial for policymakers trying to decide how best to deal with Russia. Download a free chapter from the web site
